In this document, the term lithium batteries is used to refer to both lithium ion and lithium metal batteries.

Lithium batteries are dangerous goods, much like gasoline, propane, and sulphuric acid.

Lithium batteries are used in many electronic devices such as cameras, cell phones, laptop computers, medical equipment and power tools.

To ship or import lithium batteries, including those contained in or packed with devices and equipment, you must:

declare the batteries to postal carriers, couriers or transport companies as part of the contents

meet all other shipping requirements in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations

Risks for shipping lithium batteries

While most lithium batteries are safe, some have overheated and caught fire. Once ignited, they can cause any nearby batteries to overheat and catch fire. These fires are difficult to put out and produce toxic and irritating fumes.

• You should keep in mind certain risks when shipping lithium batteries or items containing them:
• your shipment may end up on an aircraft because it may be unclear which mode of transport will be used when you send goods
• fire suppression system may be unable to extinguish all types of lithium battery fires:
•   you must take extra precautions in packaging batteries for air transport to avoid short circuit and fires
• counterfeit and no-brand lithium batteries are also of concern, because they may not have been safety tested. These lithium batteries may be poorly designed, have little protection, or contain manufacturing flaws

Regulations to follow for shipping and importing

Transport Canada regulates the safe handling, offering for transport, transporting and importing of lithium batteries by specifying classification, documentation, labelling, packaging and training requirements.

All designs and types of lithium batteries must meet the requirements of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria to be shipped safely.

Shippers and importers must meet the requirements set out in the TDG Regulations for the handling, offering for transport, transporting and importing of lithium batteries in Canada. The requirements vary by mode of transport.

Lithium batteries are subject to rigorous testing according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria. If a lithium battery does not meet the conditions, then the manufacturer must correct any failures and have it retested. This ensures a higher level of safety for design deficiencies or flaws.

The UN Manual of Tests and Criteria lists eight tests. Required tests vary depending on the type and design of lithium battery.

You are forbidden from transporting by aircraft any batteries that are:

• ship damaged
• defective
• recalled
• recycled

This ban applies whether or not these lithium batteries are contained in equipment.

Shipping by air within Canada

When shipping lithium batteries within Canada by aircraft, the TDG Regulations let you:

comply with the latest International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Technical Instructions and some additional requirements of the TDG Regulations or use the alternative requirements listed under sections 12.10, 12.12, 12.13, 12.14 or 12.17 when the ICAO Technical Instructions limit or restrict the quantity or type of dangerous goods that you can transport

Shipping or importing internationally by air

When shipping or importing lithium batteries internationally by aircraft, Part 12 of the TDG Regulations requires you to comply with the ICAO Technical Instructions and some additional requirements of the TDG Regulations.

Shipping by vessel

Please refer to Part 11 of the TDG Regulations for requirements related to marine transport.

Importing by any mode of transport

When importing lithium batteries, you must comply with the TDG Regulations. The TDG Regulations specify requirements for classification, documentation, labelling, packaging and training. You must declare them to postal carriers, couriers or transport companies.

Make sure that the lithium batteries in your shipment are not counterfeit before importing them into Canada. Buy lithium batteries from a reputable manufacturer or distributor that has documented proof that the batteries have been tested and meet the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria.

You are also required to have a proof of classification, which is further explained in section 2.2.1 of the TDG Regulations.

 

 

    Air DDP

 

Air freight is generally faster but may have stricter regulations and higher costs, especially for hazardous materials like lithium batteries. Sea freight, on the other hand, is usually more affordable but takes longer to deliver.

 

Finally, it is essential to ensure that the packaging used for shipping the battery is compliant with transportation regulations and provides adequate protection. This may include using specialized packaging materials or utilizing a licensed hazardous materials packaging service.

 

On Nov. 15th, our company received a 15-kg battery shipment containing 50 batteries. The customer asked for a faster channel and hoped to go through DDP, so we chose AIR DDP. On November 16th, we created labels and arranged flights for the goods, but due to the limited number of flights, the flights were arranged for November 22nd. The goods arrived in the United States on November 24th. After local customs clearance, tax payment, and release, the goods arrived at the U.S. warehouse on November 25th, and on November 27th, the goods were handed over to FedEx, which then transported the goods to the addressee's destination. The whole transportation experience made the recipient very satisfied.

 

    UPS

 

On October 22nd, our company received 5 boxes of 100 kg of battery shipments to BOZEMAN, MT, US. For the packaging of battery shipments, individual batteries need to be packaged in individual color boxes or cartons, and a single box of batteries needs to be more than 12kg but not more than 22kg. This time the customer's packaging was very professional, and we created labels the next day and booked flights directly. We booked the flight on October 30th; the goods arrived in the U.S. after customs clearance and arrived in the Baldwin Park, CA, US warehouse on November 2nd; the goods were handed over to UPS on November 3rd for delivery to the recipient; and they arrived in Bozeman, MT, US, on November 8th for delivery.

01.Are batteries allowed in air shipment?

Only standalone lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) with a level of charge of 30% or less are suitable for air shipment. parcels for each shipment. Shippers are only permitted to ship one package of standalone lithium-ion batteries per consignment, which must be packaged in compliance with Packing Instruction 965 or 968 Section II.

02.Can I send lithium battery by air?

When all applicable regulatory criteria are satisfied-that is, all connections are safeguarded against short circuits; the cell and battery types have passed the relevant UN tests-lithium batteries may be shipped by air.

03.Can I send batteries by international mail?

Batteries used in commonly distributed societal equipment (mobile phones, digital cameras, video cameras, laptop computers, etc.) are typically compliant with these conditions. When using international mail, you can send up to four lithium electric cells or two lithium assembled batteries in a single package.

Proper packaging and labeling

The battery should be packaged properly to prevent any damage during transit. Follow the packaging guidelines provided by the shipping provider and ensure the package is secure and well-padded.

Additionally, it is important to label the package correctly. Include clear and visible labels indicating the contents of the package, such as "Lithium-ion battery" and any other necessary warnings or handling instructions.

It is also recommended to include a copy of the necessary permits or documentation along with the package to ensure smooth customs clearance.

By following these guidelines and working with a reliable shipping provider, you can ensure a safe and efficient delivery of a battery from China to the UK.

If you want to clear the customs yourself or the recipient can clear the customs, take the express transportation battery, which is faster; it can also be a good choice.
