This month, Pier 6, the newest container terminal at Bayport Container Terminal, commenced operations, providing much-needed cargo capacity to two of the container ports in the Gulf region that are expanding the fastest.

At its annual budget workshop on November 13, the Port Committee of the Port of Houston Authority approved the Port of Houston's current $745 million capital plan and $428 million operational budget for the fiscal year 2024, which will be used to oversee staff operations and manage facilities and operations.

The Port of Houston's capital program will keep building new general cargo facilities and increasing container capacity in order to give customers effective expansion opportunities and stimulate the local economy.

The Houston Ship Channel Expansion-Project 11 contract is anticipated to be worth $132 million, while capital contracts pertaining to Port Houston operations are projected to be worth about $613 million in 2019.

Furthermore, in order to bolster the Port of Houston's stewardship efforts, spur economic growth, and generate employment, Budget 2024 supports the Port of Houston's investments in its neighborhoods as well as its land and waterfront infrastructure. It also keeps applying for grants of unprecedented local, state, and federal money.

The preliminary study, which was published in 2021 after significant stakeholder participation, identified 72 Port of Houston management activities and introduced a sustainability action plan with 27 more emphasis areas. The amended report establishes a new goal for the Port of Houston's 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal and provides additional data tracking progress toward these objectives.
