Hapag-Lloyd, the world's fifth-largest shipping company, announced the installation of its 700th tracking device on October 23rd, calling it "An important moment to create the world's largest fleet of smart containers".

At the company's headquarters in Hamburg, the German Federal Minister of Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, personally installed the equipment on a container.

"Digitalization provides a huge opportunity for the transport industry," said Wissing. "One sign is Hapag-Lloyd's progress in building a fleet of smart containers. These advances not only benefit the shipping industry, but also strengthen Germany's position as a place of innovation and help realize our vision of a closer and more efficient transport sector. "

In addition, Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen commented: "We are proud to be at the forefront of container transport digitization. Our Smart Container Fleet project aims to change the industry and set new standards for supply chain transparency and customer service."

The German ocean shipping company is expected to become the first container shipping company in the world to equip its entire fleet of 1.6 million dry containers with real-time tracking equipment.

Hapag-Lloyd pointed out that dry container monitoring will be a "game changer". Real-time tracking technology will be permanently installed on standard containers and collect data from standard containers to improve visibility. And answer the key question: "where is my container now?"

According to Hapag-Lloyd, solar cell-powered tracking devices are equipped with internal sensors and GPS to transmit data through the battery network in addition to recording shock events and ambient temperatures.

In addition, Hapag-Lloyd also said that the equipment is explosion-proof in accordance with established standards to ensure the safety of crew, cargo and ships.

The vast majority of Hapag-Lloyd's box fleet will be intelligent in early 2024. And at about the same time, Hapag-Lloyd will launch a corresponding commercial product called "Live Position".
